Emotional Intelligence – Taking Accountability
Taking accountability in the workplace can be tough. A lot of dynamics and history can be in play. When situations arise where you need to take accountability, it’s important that you do. Lack of accountability affects team culture, engagement, and team dynamics.
SELF REFLECTION
This self reflection section is meant to be kept private and not shared with others in order to gain the best reflections to the questions below.
- When you receive feedback on a situation from a colleague, are you taking accountability or deflecting?
- How did you respond to the last time someone came to you with feedback?
- When is the last time you thanked someone for feedback received?
- How do you handle taking accountability with a direct report, peer, direct leader, or top leadership? If differences between them, what is the reasoning?
- Accountability can be tough depending on items like work environment, team dynamics, or self insecurities. What impact do you think influences you currently taking accountability?
- How have you grown with taking accountability? What is one way you can improve with taking accountability?
- Do you have a defense mechanism to push off taking accountability?
GROUP DISCUSSION
Discussion questions are a great way to dive into the topic of taking accountability and uncover new insights.
- Do you notice conversations where accountability tends to be taken, refused, or difficult to accept (yourself and/or others)? What steps do you think can be done to breakdown barriers?
- What proactively can you or your colleagues do to help with feeling you can take more accountability? What does not help you with taking more accountability?
- What can your leader do to help with you and your colleagues feeling comfortable taking accountability?
- How does team and/or company culture impact accountability? (Current or previous company or team)
- What’s one commitment you plan to do related to taking accountability?

Ongoing Application and Reinforcement
After a training, exercise, or assessment is completed, ongoing application and reinforcement become the focus. Learning is sustained through follow-up trainings, exercises, and/or micro-learning opportunities, as well as by integrating the topic into goals, performance conversations, recognition efforts, and peer learning groups.
As individuals build knowledge, experience, and confidence, they are empowered to lead, share insights, and support others in applying the learning as well. This approach reflects the meaning of Praeliscere with Learn, Apply, Lead.
