Emotional Intelligence – Handling Change

Emotional Intelligence – Handling Change

Handling change, especially if larger can be overwhelming where resistance occurs. Talking through your responses when you resisted or accepted change and what helped with this acceptance can be used for strategically handling change in the future.

INITIAL RESPONSE
Talk through or reflect individually what your initial response tends to be with change. Some questions to spark conversation and reflection are below.

  • Does initial response to change depend on the area of the change or level of impact of the change?
  • Has your initial response tended to change over the years?
  • Do you see where your initial response to change can grow or be maintained in the future?

ACCEPTANCE
Talk through or reflect individually work situations that have led to acceptance of change. Some questions to spark conversation and reflection are below.

  • Describe a situation(s) when you have accepted the change quickly?
  • Describe a situation(s) when you took a longer time to accept?
  • Have you had a situation(s) where you never really accepted a change? If yes, please describe.
  • How often do you tend to have situations that are quicker to acceptance of change vs. longer vs. never?

WHAT HELPS
Talk through or reflect individually what helps you accept or become more open to the change. Some questions to spark conversation and reflection are below.

  • In the situations that you described, what do you think helped with accepting of the change? What impacted a delay in accepting of the change?
  • Is there education you would like to have related to change? (e.g., the psychology of change, change management)
  • Did your leaders, peers, and/or direct reports impact the acceptance of change? If yes, how so.
  • Do you think you have progressed overtime with acceptance of change? What will help you grow more or maintain?

Ongoing Application and Reinforcement

After a training, exercise, or assessment is completed, ongoing application and reinforcement become the focus. Learning is sustained through follow-up trainings, exercises, and/or micro-learning opportunities, as well as by integrating the topic into goals, performance conversations, recognition efforts, and peer learning groups.

As individuals build knowledge, experience, and confidence, they are empowered to lead, share insights, and support others in applying the learning as well. This approach reflects the meaning of Praeliscere with Learn, Apply, Lead.

Learn. Apply. Lead.
