Communication Exercise – Psychological Safety
Psychological safety is important to make a priority at work. When psychological safety is higher at work, it creates more productivity and improves team culture.
Before diving into the exercise, make sure everyone is on the same page with what psychological safety is, what it isn’t, and why it’s important.
YOUR PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY
What do you need individually to feel psychologically safe? Document your answers below.
TEAM MEMBER PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY
While individuals will most likely have similarities with this question, you may find unique differences between colleagues. In a group setting have individuals share what they need individually to feel psychologically safe. This shouldn’t be a requirement of everyone to do but optional. Take note when you hear similarities or differences between yours and others. These notes will also be beneficial after this exercise in everyday work to help create the best environment for you and your colleagues.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Discussion questions can be a great way to dive further into the topic of psychological safety and gain new insights.
- What surprised you about similarities or differences? What wasn’t surprising?

- What is one action step you plan to take moving forward?
- Have you dove into psychological safety discussions or exercises before? What future trainings or exercises related to this topic would you want?

Ongoing Application and Reinforcement
After a training, exercise, or assessment is completed, ongoing application and reinforcement become the focus. Learning is sustained through follow-up trainings, exercises, and/or micro-learning opportunities, as well as by integrating the topic into goals, performance conversations, recognition efforts, and peer learning groups.
As individuals build knowledge, experience, and confidence, they are empowered to lead, share insights, and support others in applying the learning as well. This approach reflects the meaning of Praeliscere with Learn, Apply, Lead.
