Communication Exercise – Perspective
Taking different perspectives with work related situations can be beneficial. We are going to dive into some common work scenarios and viewpoints individuals may have.
SCENARIO 1
One of the managers on a team is not strong with their leadership or communication and lacks confidence. This is impacting clear communication and team culture. Individuals on the team have gone to their leaders regarding frustrations. They don’t seem to see an improvement. Go through each individual in the scenario below and try to see the situation from their perspective.
- Leader’s Perspective (Manager’s Boss)
- Manager’s Perspective (individual that the scenario is about)
- Peers’ Perspective
- Direct Reports’ Perspective
What is something from each perspective you could take moving forward related to real world situations?
SCENARIO 2
A team member is continually coming into work late, their work has been lower quality, and they tend to miss deadlines. The team member is friendly to everyone. Colleagues have gone to their leaders about their frustrations. There doesn’t seem to be much improvement and they continue to come into work late. Go through each individual in the scenario below and try to see the situation from their perspective.
- Manager’s Perspective
- Team Member’s Perspective (individual that the scenario is about)
- Colleagues’/Peers’ Perspective
What is something from each perspective you could take moving forward related to real world situations?
SCENARIO 3
A leader is having a hard time coaching one of their direct reports. The leader has broken items down for them and delivered feedback in the their preferred way. The direct report is still not showing progress after 3 months of continual coaching. The leader has heard some negative or frustrating feedback but it has become quieter lately. Go through each individual in the scenario below and try to see the situation from their perspective.
- Manager’s Perspective
- Direct Report’s Perspective (individual that the scenario is about)
- Colleagues’/Peers’ Perspective
What is something from each perspective you could take moving forward related to real world situations?
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Discussion questions can be a great way to dive further into the topic of perspective and gain new insights.
- What is something you plan to take outside of this exercise?
- What assumptions do you think you were making about individuals? Do you tend to do this when confronting similar real life situations?
- What communication do you think would be appropriate for those involved to share with others to help with understanding their perspective in a situation?
- How does trust and team culture affect situations like the ones discussed?

Ongoing Application and Reinforcement
After a training, exercise, or assessment is completed, ongoing application and reinforcement become the focus. Learning is sustained through follow-up trainings, exercises, and/or micro-learning opportunities, as well as by integrating the topic into goals, performance conversations, recognition efforts, and peer learning groups.
As individuals build knowledge, experience, and confidence, they are empowered to lead, share insights, and support others in applying the learning as well. This approach reflects the meaning of Praeliscere with Learn, Apply, Lead.
