Communication Exercise – Open to Feedback?

Communication Exercise – Open to Feedback?

A variety of emotions can happen when receiving feedback. Having a self-checklist can help with reminders related to your approach, acceptance, and maintaining good and positive behaviors.

SELF-CHECKLIST
Below is a self-checklist to think through how you’re responding and approaching feedback. You’re welcome to add to this list.

  • Am I comfortable giving feedback? What can I do to become more comfortable? Do I share with others how they can support me?
  • Do I show appreciation when feedback is given?
  • Do I openly ask for feedback?
  • Do I tend to be open or closed off to feedback? Does it depend on who it’s coming from or what area of focus the feedback is in?
  • How could I be more open to feedback?
  • Do I share with others my feedback preferences?
  • Do I tend to view feedback overall as negative, positive or neutral? How can I view it more neutrally or positively?

SELF REMINDERS
With insights from the prior section, create your own list of reminders when it comes to feedback. This could be a reminder on staying calm if you have a hard time with feedback or purposefully creating reminders for yourself to ask others for feedback.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Discussion questions can be a great way to dive further into the topic of feedback and gain new insights.

  • Did you realize anything surprising about yourself through this exercise?
  • What’s one action item you plan to do moving forward related to feedback?
  • What can your colleagues do to make feedback easier? What can you do for your colleagues?
  • What is something your company can do to make feedback easier?

Ongoing Application and Reinforcement

After a training, exercise, or assessment is completed, ongoing application and reinforcement become the focus. Learning is sustained through follow-up trainings, exercises, and/or micro-learning opportunities, as well as by integrating the topic into goals, performance conversations, recognition efforts, and peer learning groups.

As individuals build knowledge, experience, and confidence, they are empowered to lead, share insights, and support others in applying the learning as well. This approach reflects the meaning of Praeliscere with Learn, Apply, Lead.

Learn. Apply. Lead.
