Check In Meeting Exercises – Strengths Focus
We don’t always have time for a formal training or exercise to do with a team. Shorter 5-10 minute exercises can be perfect options to include in monthly or periodic check in meetings with a leader and their team members. Choose one of the three activities below that best fit your needs.
THIS OR THAT
In the exercise, share what you tend to do (this or that) related to strengths. You are welcome to share the reasoning behind your selection.
- Feel confident identifying/owning your strengths OR feel insecure or uncertain
- Appreciate others’ strengths OR tend to not identify others’ strengths
- Your strengths tend to help connect with others OR more tactical support
- Your strengths help an assignment or projects momentum at the start OR completion OR throughout
- Purposely empower others strengths OR not a priority of empowerment
REAL WORLD SITUATIONS
Identify two situations that involve strengths you want to bring up and talk through. It could be a mixture of situations that were handled well or poorly, currently ongoing, ones still bothering you, or not yet handled.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Discussion questions are a great way to dive deeper into the topic of strengths and gain new insights.
- Does identifying your strengths help with self confidence and advocating for yourself?
- Does identifying others’ strengths help with appreciating more the differences with your colleagues?
- How would you like to dive further into strengths work?
- How do you think strengths can be involved more in your team?
- What help do you need related to your own strengths on a regular or periodic basis?

Ongoing Application and Reinforcement
After a training, exercise, or assessment is completed, ongoing application and reinforcement become the focus. Learning is sustained through follow-up trainings, exercises, and/or micro-learning opportunities, as well as by integrating the topic into goals, performance conversations, recognition efforts, and peer learning groups.
As individuals build knowledge, experience, and confidence, they are empowered to lead, share insights, and support others in applying the learning as well. This approach reflects the meaning of Praeliscere with Learn, Apply, Lead.
