Check In Meeting Exercises – Emotional Intelligence Focus

Check In Meeting Exercises – Emotional Intelligence Focus

We don’t always have time for a formal training or exercise to do with a team. Shorter 5-10 minute exercises can be perfect options to include in monthly or periodic check in meetings with a leader and their team members. Choose one of the three activities below that best fit your needs.

FIRST INSTINCT
In this exercise, share what your first instinct/reaction is related to these areas connected to emotional intelligence. (e.g., could be embrace, hesitant, or feel nervous)

  • Topic of emotional intelligence
  • Having to take a self assessment of emotional intelligence
  • Having a 360-Degree assessment completed on your emotional intelligence
  • Having to participate in giving feedback on another person’s 360-Degree assessment
  • Participating in a training of emotional intelligence
  • Keeping your emotional intelligence top of mind
  • Your leader or colleagues keeping their emotional intelligence top of mind

REAL WORLD SITUATIONS
Identify two situations that involved emotional intelligence you want to bring up and talk through. It could be a mixture of situations that involve how you’ve grown, did/didn’t handle great, stood out (in positive, negative, or neutral way) related to emotional intelligence. Or a situation where more knowledge with emotional intelligence could have benefited.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Discussion questions can be a great way to dive into the topic of emotional intelligence and gain new insights on the topic.

  • How comfortable are you with the topic of emotional intelligence? How do you think your colleagues or leaders could help make you feel more comfortable?
  • How do you think emotional intelligence can help your team, company, and/or you?
  • Do you think emotional intelligence is embraced on your team or company?
  • What emotions would you feel if emotional intelligence was a topic more discussed at work?
  • What concerns do you have if emotional intelligence was more prevalent in conversations?

Ongoing Application and Reinforcement

After a training, exercise, or assessment is completed, ongoing application and reinforcement become the focus. Learning is sustained through follow-up trainings, exercises, and/or micro-learning opportunities, as well as by integrating the topic into goals, performance conversations, recognition efforts, and peer learning groups.

As individuals build knowledge, experience, and confidence, they are empowered to lead, share insights, and support others in applying the learning as well. This approach reflects the meaning of Praeliscere with Learn, Apply, Lead.

Learn. Apply. Lead.
